Inspired by Pablo Picasso and Joan Jonas video art this is my introspective piece on the act of self portraiture. Static vs animated, life vs electronic, skin vs light, present time vs past and the never ending battle of representation, always trying to mimic and align oneself.

The fragility of a bubble

If emotion or thought could exist in a form or object, I believe it would be a bubble. We would all walk around followed by a floating bubble that would continuously pop when a new thought replaced it. I think this helps explain the problem of introspective thinking. For when we would turn to look at the thought or emotion felt (the bubble behind us)...it would burst and leave nothing but a shimmery trace. For things just are, and we do not have the capacity to comprehend everything, no matter how wise or intelligent people may seem to think they are.

The trouble with introspective thinking

I've been reading the great C.S. Lewis of late and he is (by my standards) the greatest intellect that has the ability to articulate his words with such fluidity... it makes it seem as if you aren't reading at all.

In particular I was reading his perspective on thought and emotion. He identifies that the essential property of love,hate,fear, hope or desire is attention to their object. To cease thinking about or attending to the (object) is, so far, to cease loving, being afraid. "You cannot hope and think about hoping at the same time; for in hope we look to hope's object and we interrupt this by turning round to look at the hope itself."

I think this has been my main problem in exploring emotion as a singular thing, removed from it's context and just existing on its own....trying to explain itself.

In introspection we try to look 'inside ourselves' and see what's going on. But nearly everything that was going on a moment before is stopped by the very act of our turning to look at it. (but this does not mean that introspection finds nothing). It finds precisely what is left behind by the suspension of all our normal activities; and what is left behind is mainly mental images & physical sensations. The great error is to mistake this sediment for the activities themselves.

'That is how many men have come to believe that thought is only unspoken words, or the appreciation, when interrupted, leave behind- like the swell at sea, working after the wind has dropped.'

He expressed to me things so clearly and showed how wrong we can be in introspective thought. Things aren't always as they seem and there is a danger in looking and analyzing things the wrong way.

After so much grey victorian weather, the sun was out and the clouds were happy against the blue blue sky. It was such a delicious day of brightly coloured animals. Exploring the theme of emotion as a tangible object has lead to some interesting medium discoveries. I happened on the touchable bubble apparatus in a kids store, which for your informtation continues to be fun over the ages of 8-10. I filled up my studio with the strangely bouncey shapes last week. (I'd never had such fun in studio time). This strange and light inhibiting form is delicate and represents to me the 'unseen' but felt quality emotions tend to have. In relation to human interaction, being intune to one anothers emotions, reacting, manipulating and mirroring bodylanguage...the bubble works well in articulating all of these. The way it bounces and never really settles to the skin. It deflates in a few hours...becoming allusive and momentory. Like feelings we wish we could bottle up, but know that we can't. My most generous significant other, lent me his body and I made a film introducing the invisible-visible, like a reversed magic trick. The film (in it's raw stages) came out very intimate and voyeristic. I'll post it up when I can and in the meantime here are some images I photographed. It's interesting how the bubbles wrinkle against the skin, and even seemed to have their own fingerprints.

The Black Booth

Jess and I were assigned the project space ( the space between the three white walls of studio). Throughout the mumbo-jumbo of conceptual art and the question of whether art is really art at all, a thought occurred. 'What If..' an exhibition was held for just one viewer. Just one audience member. Jess and I limitied our viewer to the unassuming Tom in our class. Hence we made a private booth restricted only to Tom's inhabitants. The construction of our booth, took much more trouble and handyman skills then were expected. (It was a very satisfying accomplishment to have it successfully standing). When the class came to veiw our creation in a tutorial, no one was allowed to participate aside Tom. Oh the annoyance, and dismay....'what's behind the curtain?' they cried. And yet no one shall ever know except Jess and I (oh and Tom).............perhaps nothing at all. Now that's a concept for you.

Kate MccGwire creates birdlike forms. These are the feathers of crows,magpies and pigeons. I think there is something sinister and beautiful about the form of feathers that appear to flow out of the fireplace. The feathers have a slippery, water like quality....how beautiful.

Sunday Photoshoot on the shore of Balnarring. It was raining, so I paintied Jordan in the car. I like the unnatural in contrast to the landscape and element of land and water. I paint images of Jordan all the time, so in fitting with my concept of audience and artist relationship, I painted him literally. He was my walking art peice. Life on a boat is easy

I went on a ship from Sydney to New Zealand and back again.
It was lovely not being able to see land, and just experience the vastness of the blue desert.
The sun was warm, and the wind was cold. It was an amazing experience, and I kept imagining myself on the titanic. It was nice to finally land myself in my bed at home. Safely back from the endless ocean.

I've FINISHED, yes you didn't believe I'd make it did you?
Today I have placed the paint brush down for a moment.
Handed in my finals, ( took a mighty effort of transport) ...I traversed across 8 lanes of traffic, up 4 flights of stairs, trollied down coles carparks, up lifts, and many falls and spills. And now I am finally back in my little room, with piles of paintings and faces stacked beside me. I'm out of breath and out of myself. All this effort all this time and soul for just 3 hours of today. I'm so glad I got to the end, I created so much work, I was drowning myself in it. I hope it was recieved well. Fingers crossed. The pictures are of the work I installed, the rest were put in piles to be veiwed as back up work, ( i hope they bothered to go through it all)

There's nothing like the smell of Turps in the morning

This is the body of work thus far. With everything due tomorrow, i've spent the last few hours wishing the paint to dry. As I always work with oils, it can take up to 5 days for the paint to fully dry, as I have until tomorrow at 8.15 am, this could be a big problem.
Most of these are works in progress, and I have a massive bit of green canvas with a face in the middle of my room. I have to tip toe around it to get to my closet, and i've got palettes and paint and brushes and bottles and paper all over the place. Yes my room as turned into a little art cave, where nothing is quite safe from the smell of TURPS, oil, paint, and tuna or mangoes. (my two main food groups at the moment)
I really must get onto cleaning up this joint, once I have placed everything I am in the hands of the markers.

Keeping Face

So I have this love (obesession rather) with faces. I can stop painting them. There is just something about the face that gets me excited with the paintbrush. Essentially that is all. When i approach the artwork, i just can't wait to get in there and map out the face. I leave the eyes last, for they are my favourite. I work from life, I get my friends ( lovely creatures that they are) to sit for me. I usually let them sit for 20 min intervals, lasting between an hour and 40 minutes. I go in strong, blocking out shadow, then work up the tones to capture the depth. I work alla prima ( which is wet oil paint on wet.) in other words i don't wait for layers to dry. I'm just too impatient that way. So really I capture a brief snippet or glimpse of the moment of the person in front, I try to capture their essence... knowing all the while the connection we both share. The gaze, of me objectively looking and them holding my gaze or knowing it's there.
I just thought I'd share that with you. Now to figure out a series that will be ok for my endof semester showing... (wish me luck)

Nearing the end of semester, I have realized that I must get my paintbrush moving as much as possible. I evolve my ideas/technique/style by painting and creating as much as possible. I find it progresses by itself. I painted this portrait of my lovely friend yesterday. It took about 40min. Sometimes I wish I had enough friends down here (melbourne) to paint one after the other... as they lined up outside my little door. Stay tuned for more hopefully.

I had the pleasure of seeing a lecture by Rosslynd Piggott yesterday. It has been a while since I've been enthralled and inspired by a lecture at uni. She had me hooked. Not only were her works, subtle and demure they had such a quiet strength about them. Her collaborative works with glass blowers were among my favourites...where she captures breath. The art is so visually satisfying as well as conceptually articulate. I was so compelled I went and hunted the gallery with her work displayed in brunswick st, (opposite the jasmine covered cafe, that sells particularly good, gluten free pumpkin pizza's)

We happened upon this beautiful park, that was minutes from my house.
I had never seen it before. It was along this hidden path full of tall green lamp posts.
The further in we went the more beautiful and larger it became, until in the middle we found a giant pond, hedged with flowers and reeds. A japanese bridge surrounded in lilies, everything was illuminated on the saturday we thought we never had.

The most intense drawing class ever.
I hereby pronounce pumpkins and material, the hardest still life to draw.
Goodness, it took it out of me. Though i was already in pain before i started (soccer match the night before). And for those of you that don't know, drawing takes muscles and will power.
At least the four hour straight classes i attend do.
I overcame, and am so pleased i'm improving :)
Thought I'd share my hard labours with you.

Breathing in charcoal and bugs

Recent smudgings from class.
The darker ones are drawn with a rubber to explore tone.
I've never used so much charcoal in my life... buying more will send me broke.
I believe my lungs will now have a thin lining of charcoal.

Dreaming of home. I'm so excited I get to visit my favourite places tomorrow. It'll be strange coming home after a month. All the trees will be different. I've forgotten how rain water tastes and the sound of crickets and cicadas at night. Until tomorrow, until then.

Susanna Majuri is an amazing Finnish photographer who speaks to my heart.

Her images grouped with her thoughts and concepts are just magical...

'I suggest: we can be multiple. Touch your enviroment and it

will show itself as fantastic. People are unpredictable. They

are male and female at the same time. Eyes whisper sparks.

The water is the most remarkable. It carries bodies. Water is

colour. The shimmer and the deep green. My challenge is to

see the reality in a non-traditional light. When I am shooting

pictures, I have a premonition that something strange is about

to happen.

I follow the logic of colours, when I combine places, people

and objects. To me the most important quality of photography

is it´s capability to convey emotions.

I suggest: imagine the details a bit further. Who is drawing

trees in to the pond. When you touch the surface of the house

it turns out to be your companion.

I throw myself into a fictive reality in the shootings. My heart

beats wildly when I can feel the presence of surprises. When

you´re in love, but bid farewell to the channel. You forgot the

ship and it sinks. When the fall is unreachable behind the grey

sorrow.

I want to narrate feelings like in novels. The reader of images

gets a chance to handle her lost and encounters. There is a

place for danger. Did you die when you saw the shadow of the

bird? The language is a map and draws around us, unknown and

familiar.I believe in a single image. It breaths strong.'

Tuesday drawing class,
My mind has been so mixed up lately,
It was good to concentrate on the task at hand.
It was very difficult and frustrating at times,
but I'm happy with the end result and thought I'd share my sketch with you.

The Filters of the Mind

'Uni assignment'
Please help me short list :)
The filters of the mind is a metaphorical exploration of the human condition.
Blurred and scewed in the water under ripples everything is obscured. We are such insignificant forms of mass in comparison to the rest of the universe. Amongst our own worlds we get caught up and consumed, when in reality we are just apart of everything else, repeating anothers mistakes and rewriting history.

Take Flight

So I've bundled my life belongings into three suitcases.
Everything I am and need.
Leaving my comfortable space to study art in Victoria.
Seeing as I've been in the same little house on the same little hill in the same little town all of my life, I consider moving to the city... pretty massive.
I'm not sure if i know how to cook or look after myself.
Things shall be interesting.
I hope for the best.

My Artist Statement

She ate the blue right off the canvas, sucked every last drip from her fingertips. They never got the point. Of course they didn't. For she alone and no one else could understand the taste of its truth. The melancholy hue of the emotional stained canvas whispered tales of adventure. Mysterious and wonderful stories, half hidden, half smudged into the canvas. Show us, tell us your secrets they cried. But she didn't. Couldn't. They never stayed awake with the canvas, it's blank face staring her down in the grey hours of the morning. They never spent days with it, battling it's disposition. They never. Of course they didn't. She did. That's why, no matter who bought, sold and told the world about it, it was her painting. That was why only she knew how faintly sweet, and fairly toxic the blue that held their hearts tasted on her tongue.
Her love. Her blue.
